THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE PLATE
Food is never experienced in isolation. This signature work examines how mood, memory, culture, environment, stress, seasonality, behavior and sensory experience shape the way we experience a meal.
The Psychology of the Plate considers the relationship between food, body, mind, place and experience—not food rules, restriction or diagnoses.
THE BOOK & COOKBOOK
A seasonal journey through food, body, mood, memory, culture and life.
Denise is developing The Psychology of the Plate as both a narrative book and cookbook. The project explores food, mood, the gut-brain connection, memory, culture, environment, stress, seasonality and everyday life.
The cookbook brings those ideas into practice through seasonal, approachable recipes designed for real kitchens and real life. This is not a diet book or a food journal; it is a way of understanding how food fits into the larger experience of being human.

Two sides of the plate. One expertise.

Denise’s perspective is shaped by decades of hands-on culinary and hospitality work. Trained at Le Cordon Bleu, she has worked across restaurants, catering, commercial kitchens, hospitality operations, culinary education, food styling, business ownership and guest-chef programming.
Her early work as a florist developed an eye for color, composition, seasonality, texture and visual storytelling—a sensibility still present in her approach to food, plating, tables and hospitality environments. Her B.A. and M.A. in Psychology deepen her inquiry into mood, memory, behavior, stress, culture and connection.
She brings the practical side of cooking, ingredients, technique and service together with the human side of how people experience food. The Psychology of the Plate grew from the intersection.

One journey. Food at the center.
Each chapter expanded how I understand food, people, hospitality, behavior and experience—not a collection of unrelated careers.
Denise’s work began with creativity, food and hospitality. Her florist experience developed an instinct for color, composition, seasonality, presentation and the atmosphere created by a thoughtfully composed environment. That visual foundation followed her into the kitchen.
After training at Le Cordon Bleu, she worked across restaurants, catering, commercial kitchens, food-service operations, culinary education and hospitality leadership, while also owning and operating food businesses. That work brought direct responsibility for people, systems, service, ingredients and the guest experience.
Teaching and hospitality widened the inquiry into human behavior. Denise earned a B.A. and M.A. in Psychology at the University of Arizona, deepening her exploration of how memory, stress, culture, routine and environment shape the experience of eating. The Psychology of the Plate grew from that intersection. Each chapter expanded one culinary practice; food has always been the center.
